Total area is the sum of all walls and the ceiling. The calculator multiplies this by the number of coats, then divides by your coverage value to estimate paint volume.
Common coverage values are about 350 sq ft per gallon for many wall paints and around 10 sq m per liter for Metric labels, but you can adjust this to match the tin in your local store.
